5 Defining Qualities of a Good Mentor
Nothing is accomplished alone and even some of the greats needed help along the way. Being a mentor to someone is a very important relationship because everyone needs help once in a while. A mentor also helps train employees and this can ensure that you could one day pass down the business to someone you trust. More importantly it helps both parties learn about each other and help. Let’s look at the 5 qualities you should look for in a mentor.
1. Ability to communicate what they know
The information they have isn’t useful if they can’t explain what they know. They have to adapt to the way you learn to really get through to you. Your mentor should get a feel for their style after a couple weeks but make sure you actually understanding what they say.
2. Honesty
If you ask your mentors opinion on something you need to be sure that they’ll give you the truth. You’ll never learn if they lie to you. This also comes with building a relationship and trust with your mentor.
3. Patience
Teaching is a virtue. Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more visual or need more of an explanation. This will come with time, you just need to believe that your teacher can adapt to you
4. Inner-Motivation
You need to know that your mentor is self-driven and willing to work to be the best. Motivation grows and if they are pushing themselves to be the best then he/she will expect the same out of you.
5. Positive Attitude
A positive attitude will take you far in life…..well at least further than a negative one will. Being around negative people tends to rub off on your personality. Don’t take a failure and give up, learn from your mistake and grow. A mentor with a negative attitude will not be able to motivate you as much as one with a positive attitude.
