‘Tis the Season for Tipping Mechanics

Should mechanics get tipped during the holidays?

When you go out for a fancy dinner do you ever think twice about tipping your server? Unless the service was extremely horrible, it is common courtesy to leave a tip. As a mechanic, do you think that this standard should be the same when you complete a car repair for a customer?

In a Consumer Reports’ national survey it was found that about 6 in 10 Americans tip at least one of 14 common service providers.1 In the case of auto repair shops, many people would argue that mechanics are getting paid for their work so a tip isn’t necessary. But as a mechanic you know that sometimes you go the extra mile for your customers and a tip would be greatly appreciated.

In some cases, it is against policy for mechanics to accept monetary tips. But because the CarCareCONNECT team knows that you deserve something special this holiday season, we have compiled a list of three non-monetary “tips” that your customers could give you these holidays:

  1. Don’t let Santa eat all of the cookies – auto mechanics would love to have fresh gingerbread cookies during their break at the auto shop.
  2. Create a holiday gift basket. Items such as coffee, holiday candy or even fun holiday ornaments are great to have around the shop.
  3. Gift cards are always a safe bet. Mechanics would appreciate a gift card to a local restaurant so they can treat themselves to a delicious holiday lunch break.

Spread the Holiday Cheer

If your auto repair shop allows you to accept tips, go ahead and accept the holiday gift. Whether it is a monetary tip or not, remember that a little thank you can go a long way. As you accept tips as a mechanic, also think of the service providers in your life that you could pass the thank you on to this holiday season. Santa is still making his naughty and nice list – this may secure your spot on the nice list!
